AB  -            Survey of Manufacturing Company Expectations Based on the                  SME Four Pillars of Manufacturing KnowledgeAbstractThe Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has published a detailed study of manufacturingeducational needs entitled Curricula 2015: A Four Year Strategic Plan for ManufacturingEducation. A principle component of the study is the organization and visual representation ofthe key topics for manufacturing education into a graphical form that has been designated the"Four Pillars of Manufacturing Knowledge" (previously titled the"Four Pillars of Manufacturing Engineering").To assist in program and curriculum improvement of manufacturing engineering or technologyprograms, a survey has been (will be) conducted of a broad audience including managers,company owners and educators who are members of SME, or subscribe to the EngineeringTechnology Listserv. The topics identified in the Four Pillars of Manufacturing Knowledge werespecified along with a few others. Respondents were asked to indicate (in their opinion) howimportant each topic is for graduates of these programs.This paper provides documentation and evaluation of manufacturing company priorities formanufacturing engineering or technology programs. This can benefit any program in assessingtheir effectiveness to fulfill the needs/expectations of manufacturing industries, and providesrecommendations of appropriate curriculum revisions to enhance the job-readiness of students tobetter serve these ‘customers’ of our academic services.An additional benefit of this survey and evaluation is the validation of the topics and structure ofthe Four Pillars of Manufacturing Knowledge, with the opportunity to contribute to evolutionaryimprovements.Included in the paper and presentation will is an explanation of the survey and methodologiesused to gather and organize the data received, and the summary and analysis of results. Therewill also be a listing of significant comments by respondents, and implications of the results foradjustments in subject matter topics, applications and technologies for the curriculum theseprograms.
