Malshe*,                             Department of Mechanical Engineering                                     University of Arkansas                                     Fayetteville AR 72701Abstract:Advancement in the science and technology and in the fast changing engineering environmentthere is a strong need for training new faculty and graduate students to become a successfulteacher. The objective of this pilot program was to train a postdoctoral researcher and a graduatestudent on pedagogical techniques, developing effective lectures, management andorganizational skills, and timely delivery of subject related material such as class notes, grades,homework, tests etc. using Materials Science and Engineering Course as a learning vehicle.Common pedagogical techniques included communication and presentation skills, bodylanguage and tonal variation for engagement, preparation of information rich slides andexplanation which helped the graduate student and postdoc provide spherical learning experiencefor students – connect the dots between theory and applications. In this program, the menteeslearnt five key aspects of modern teaching: (1) dedication and empathy towards students, (2)engaging and exciting the students in the class for the subject matter and self-motivated learningafter-class, (3) giving and receiving constructive feedback, (4) learn how to learn and teach, and(5) connect the dots between classroom learning and real world applications. We tested thismodel through evaluation measures during tests, projects and industry visit. This manuscriptpresents the outcome of the teaching mentorship experiment. Our findings could provide apathway for the new engineering faculty to become effective teacher and a successful mentor.*Corresponding author: apm2@uark.edu
