services in education and quality assurance in the international arena. Prior to that, he had a long career in education: faculty member at MIT, department chair in civil engineering at Ohio State University, dean of engineering at University of Massachusetts, academic vice president at Boston University, president at University of Delaware, founding president at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (Abu Dhabi), and senior advisor at Khalifa
University of Science and Technology (Abu Dhabi).

Abstract

This paper describes the current efforts of higher education institutions in developingcountries to seek accreditation from established quality assurance organizations in theUnited States. It contains two case studies of fields in which US accreditationorganizations have responded effectively to such requests – engineering and teachereducation. It closes with a discussion of issues and complexities involved in evaluatingforeign institutions with US standards, and recommends appropriate actions.
